Network Protocols HOW-TO by Phil Ward

In Audio, Audio Product News, home_pageby Media

Network protocols are a key topic for discussion for House of Worship techs, with their significant cost-savings and added flexibility. One of the latest products to offer networked digital audio transport is also one of the simplest: Dante Via™, a software package developed by Audinate®, the company behind the ubiquitous Dante™ networking protocol.
Dante is a rapidly emerging digital audio-over-IP transport protocol; initial take-up has been enthusiastic in the live and installed sound sector, with broadcast and other markets too expressing growing interest. Its take-up by pro audio manufacturers has been astounding. With 300 partners now on board, placing over 750 Dante-enabled products on the current market, support for the protocol shows no sign of abating. It has been described as ‘next-generation CobraNet.’
Renowned consultant Roland Hemming. “One of the things I like about Dante is that you don’t have to have any specific hardware,” he says. “The economic models for the other protocols demand that the inventors and manufacturers sell the silicone to third parties, such as Peavey. Dante becomes part of its customers’ devices, delivered as a finished package and no further headaches. Audinate does this, but also has software drivers: Dante can be run directly on your PC or Mac, which opens it up to a wider market. It has lower propagation delay, too.”

Mississippi, USA – Parkway Pentecostal Church in Madison County, Mississippi, regularly holds dynamic worship and live broadcast services for its hundreds of regular worshippers. In their quest to provide a more dynamic audio experience for their congregation, the church recently invested in an SSL L200 console and an SSL SiX mixer in time for its annual Apostolic Conference, enabling their volunteer-based technical team to put on flawless live services.
Founded in 1991, Parkway Pentecostal Church has been steadily growing its numbers ever since. “We have a 46,000 square-foot auditorium, and we have not only our local church in Madison, but a fairly large broadcast audience that joins us weekly,” said Parkway’s music director, Serena Lentz. “One of the main things that we wanted to improve was our broadcast quality; we were very dissatisfied with what we were sending out over the airways.”
After Porche Advanced Systems showed Lentz the benefits of the SSL L200 and how it could be utilized along with the SiX compact console, Parkway Pentecostal Church decided to switch to the new consoles right away.

Los Angeles, CA, September 4, 2019 – Focusrite has released RedNet Control 2.4, a free software update that adds Dante Domain Manager (DDM) and AES67/AES70 compatibility, as well as an AES3 Kill Switch function, background mode and other enhancements.
RedNet Control 2.4 makes all Focusrite Red audio interfaces, plus RedNet devices with Audinate Brooklyn 2, Ultimo and Ultimo X architecture, compatible with Dante Domain Manager. This new functionality brings advantages to administrators of large networked audio systems, who can now assign the privilege structure of Dante Domain Manager to RedNet Control users. Specifically, RedNet Control 2.4 recognizes the four distinct levels of system access granted within DDM: Site Administrator, Domain Administrator, Operator and Guest. As a result, users can be granted access only to the RedNet Control features necessary for their workflow. Those who just need to record audio from an existing subscription, for example, will not be able to make admin-level adjustments such as sample rate changes, or create new audio subscriptions.

New DPA 2028 Vocal Mic Aims to Change the Live Performance Landscape

ALLEROD, DENMARK, AUGUST 2019DPA Microphones presents a new addition to its microphone lineup, the 2028 Vocal Microphone. The 2028 delivers DPA’s renowned natural sound, which allows all types of vocals to shine. Perfect for everyone from indie artists to international touring singers, the 2028 mic is ideally suited for live stage performances, broadcast and pro AV applications.
On a live stage, the 2028 delivers the same sonic qualities as DPA’s other great solutions. In fact, the 2028 needs no (or very little) EQ to sound just like you are standing next to the singer listening to their performance. This allows the artist to hone-in on their vocals as if not using a microphone, which puts less strain on the voice. In addition, the transparency of the 2028 allows engineers to spend their time shaping the sound experience rather than covering up issues caused by artifacts.
