DPA Microphones’ new 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun Microphone is being widely adapted into the television and film production world as a plant mic solution. Featuring the same sonic qualities as the brand’s supercardioid 4097 CORE Choir Microphone, the compact 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun has been optimized to pick up speech from a distance.

“We spoke with professional sound engineers to find out what they needed in their toolboxes and designed the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun as a plant mic solution to complement their other equipment,” says René Mørch, product manager, DPA Microphones. “Ideal for miking in small spaces, the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun has a small footprint and clear audio pickup. The sonic qualities of the 4097 CORE Micro Shotgun are particularly beneficial for placing mics in inconspicuous locations as it enables location sound experts to capture sound from anywhere on set. Used in combination with our boom mics and lavaliers, the 4097 Micro Shotgun becomes the final piece of a complete microphone package to meet the needs of any TV or film production. Since the 4097 has the same sonic characteristics as all DPA mics, it is now easy to capture reliable, high-quality audio that doesn’t need dubbing or hours of mixing and post-production work.”

Having been raised by a musical family, Carlos Henriquez was destined to find his passion for the performing arts. As a Juilliard Music Advancement Program (MAP) graduate with an impressive resume, Henriquez joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra in 1998. Over the past 22 years, Henriquez has been touring the world with the orchestra, having been featured on more than 25 albums. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck the U.S. in March, Henriquez found himself attempting to record music from home for the first time. In need of a high-quality microphone to capture pristine recordings in his makeshift home studio, Henriquez turned to MXL Microphone’s REVELATION II tube microphone.

Led by internationally acclaimed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra relies solely on acoustics, not using any amplification or monitors while on stage. With this style of recording, microphones are more important than ever. “For our performances, we solely rely on microphones, which are directed by our Acoustic Sound Engineer David Robinson and Audio Engineer Todd Whitelock,” says Henriquez. “When we first began working from home, I had nothing to offer in terms of sound other than my iPhone and laptop. I ended up capturing a couple of recordings on my iPhone, which Todd was able to work with. However, listening back, it was not the high-quality audio that we are accustomed to at Jazz at Lincoln Center. I knew I needed to do something about it.”

As an interdenominational, full Gospel, Pentecostal Church where everyone is welcome, Taylor Church (https://www.taylorchurchministries.com/) offers a series of innovative ministries designed to help everyone gain a meaningful worship experience. Recognizing the value of a well-designed sound reinforcement system, church management recently elected to upgrade their sanctuary with a new system that draws from the Event Series catalog of Valencia, Spain -based DAS Audio.

BDH Technical Systems of St. Augustine, FL, a full service audio – video design / build firm that services both the worship and commercial markets, was contracted to design and deploy the church’s new sound system. Working in close cooperation with their business partner, Invisible Audio of Jacksonville, FL (an authorized DAS Audio dealer), BDH Technical Systems penned the new loudspeaker system design that incorporated DAS Event208-AW 3-way powered line array enclosures mated with DAS Event218-A sub bass enclosures. Craig Bruce, a partner at BDH Technical Systems who also serves as the company’s primary system designer, discussed the project.

Watermark Community Church, a nondenominational evangelical church founded by Senior Pastor Todd Wagner in 1999, has long embraced the latest audio-visual technologies to help deliver services to a network of campuses across the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. To improve the audio quality of the message being delivered, not only in-person but also online, the church recently engaged commercial AV design and integration company Nexos to install three Solid State Logic Live consoles — two L200s and an L350 — and to implement a new Dante network at its main Dallas campus.

The recent upgrade, completed shortly before the coronavirus lockdown went into effect, included the installation of a 24-fader SSL Live L350 at front-of-house and a 36-fader L200 at the monitor position in the main Dallas campus’ 4,000-seat auditorium. The third SSL console, another 36-fader L200, is located in the facility’s broadcast and video control room. Worship services typically include in-house and visiting praise bands and musicians and are distributed to satellite campuses in Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco and downtown Dallas, where the pastor’s teachings are integrated into the respective live worship services at those facilities and are also streamed online.
