With over 3,000 students, nearly 1,000 of which are in seminary, Andrews University is the flagship institution in the expansive Seventh-day Adventist school system. It is located in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Pioneer Memorial Church is situated on the Andrews University campus and serves a vital role in the school’s spiritual and social life. Its congregants are diverse, young, and fired up. Global technology solutions provider, New Era Technology (Mishawaka-branch), recently revitalized the sound reinforcement in Pioneer Memorial Church with Danley Sound Labs SBH10 and SBH20 columnar loudspeakers, Danley TH212 tapped-horn subwoofers, and Danley DNA amplifiers with integrated DSP using Danley model presets.

The audio engineering experts at New Era Technology discovered Pioneer’s old system was sorely lacking evenness and coverage. “It was a cluster of units placed fifty feet up in the air, at the top of the sanctuary’s large A-frame ceiling,” explained Paul Black, account executive with New Era Technology. “Not everyone could clearly hear what was going on, and the system lacked overall intelligibility. The frequency response was limited.” In short, Pioneer Memorial Church needed smooth, even coverage across an expanse of pews capable of accommodating approximately 1,000 people. That includes a loft section at the back of the sanctuary and the pews below it.

Immanuel Baptist Church has been serving Little Rock, Arkansas for 125 years, and it recently upped its commitment with the creation of “City Center.” City Center is a community center with an 800-person capacity venue, classrooms, clinics, and more. It is built into a former Kroger grocery store that was adjacent to Immanuel Baptist’s sanctuary on the west side of the city. Regional AVL integration firm Paragon 360 of Springfield, Missouri, designed and installed a complete AVL system for City Center. A Danley Sound Labs sound reinforcement system leverages Danley’s legendary point-source pattern control in the challenging acoustic space.

The Paragon 360 team of Rich Nelms, Mark Coble, and Brian Roggow led the design, management, installation, and commissioning of City Center’s AVL system. “The main venue at City Center is meant to be modular and flexible to accommodate everything from youth concerts and church services to conferences, public talks, and parties,” explained Nelms. “The stage can be removed, and seating can be placed around tables or in rows or removed entirely. Air walls allow the larger space to become two or three smaller spaces. The footprint is large, and the minimum SPL requirements had to meet concert-level volumes.”

With a warehouse full of touring gear grounded by Covid 19, leading Latvian rental company, 3S SIA quickly transformed its Riga headquarters into a fully equipped livestream performance space, including Allen & Heath dLive and Avantis systems. Created in partnership with local broadcaster, TVNET, the resulting 3S Lockdown Sessions have reached tens of thousands of isolating music fans each week since they debuted in March, with livestreamed performances by popular artists including Latvian Blues Band, Aminata, Samanta Tina, Lauris Valters, Ozols, Indygo and Riga Reggae.

When devising a mixing system for the sessions, the 3S team did not have to look any further than its own extensive Allen & Heath inventory, which includes four dLive systems. A dLive S7000 Surface was paired up with a DM64 MixRack to mix the broadcast, with a gigaACE split enabling connection to the Avantis console handling monitors. The Avantis was teamed with a KLANG 3D spatialization engine, with OSC MIDI commands allowing most parameters to be controlled from the desk.

Breaking down barriers between athletes and fans, Ross Stripling and Cooper Surles launched “The Big Swing” podcast in January 2019 to discuss everything from sports to pop culture to finance, with a focus on all things baseball. When the co-hosts were looking to deploy a high-quality microphone solution to capture crystal-clear audio for their podcast, they found exactly what they were searching for with MXL MicrophonesBCD-1 Live Broadcast Dynamic Microphone.

“In our first few months of podcasting, audio was the biggest challenge for us,” says Stripling. “Once we were able to deploy the MXL mics and put them in front of each speaker, our audio went up twofold – the sound quality of MXL’s BCD-1 is incomparable to the previous solution we were using.”

St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan is blessed with a beautiful 250-capacity sanctuary replete with stained glass windows, smooth white walls, and an ornate baptismal font. It was built in the 1910s and continues to serve as a cornerstone of Catholic social life in Kalamazoo. Unfortunately, an outdated sound reinforcement system made it difficult to understand what was being said during St. Joseph’s services. Local AV integration firm, Sound Connections Group, turned a tremendously terrible situation into a practically perfect one with the installation of a single Danley SM96 loudspeaker. The turnaround was so complete that it earned Sound Connections Group founder and owner Duane David an enthusiastic hug from St. Joseph’s priest and accolades from its parishioners at the conclusion of the first service with the Danley in place.

Orpheum Theater, Flagstaff’s premier venue for concerts, performing arts and all things entertainment, recently upgraded its 16-year old PA system. With the help of Sound Image, a full-service audio, video, theatrical lighting, control system, acoustic design and integration firm, Orpheum Theater’s Audio Production Manager Scotty J. demoed various systems. He found the solution he was looking for with the KF810P Line Array and SB818P Single 18-inch flyable subwoofers from EAW.

“The theater doesn’t specialize in one type of music or event, so we needed a versatile PA that could not only handle speech intelligibility, but also the decibel level of hip-hop and EDM shows,” says Scotty. “Numerous times, I was worried that we had been pushing the existing PA to its last watt. The older PA’s amplitude was never a problem as we could make it loud, but the coverage, because of the design of the theater itself and the number of boxes we had, just wasn’t adequate for the room.”

The Springs Church in Colorado Springs, CO recently underwent an audio upgrade with a Martin Audio WPS system spec’d and installed by Sight and Sound Technologies, the first installation of the new system in the United States.

Asked about the project, Sight and Sound COO Kris Johnson explains: “It was basically an upgrade of their PA. They had an aging left-center-right line array system that in some respects was overkill for what they needed plus they were starting to have some problems with the speakers. They had a plan to repurpose them in another room which worked out really well timewise for us because we were able to pull the old ones down, test them out and re-install a handful of them in another room.

For Less Than Half of What Other Companies Were Bidding, Emmaus Media & Design Installs Immensely Successful Danley Jericho Horn Sound Reinforcement System at Christian Life Assembly

Christian Life Assembly is a thriving church in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. Its pie wedge-shaped sanctuary seats approximately 2,000, a capacity that is met many times over during the staging of its regionally-famous Christmas pageant. However, the church struggled to deliver high-impact services and feedback-free performances. Its thirty-eight-box distributed loudspeaker system couldn’t deliver the goods. Local AVL integration firm Emmaus Media & Design came up with a plan to replace those 38 loudspeakers with just five Danley boxes, including two Danley J2-96 Jericho Horns, as well as new Danley systems in the youth and the kids’ rooms – all for less than half of what other firms bid for the sanctuary system alone.

“Danley’s well-designed point-source loudspeakers can do the work of numerous line array elements, which makes a Danley system way less expensive than a comparable conventional system,” explained Tim James, owner of Emmaus Media & Design. “On top of that, Danley’s phase coherence and fidelity make their boxes sound better than conventional designs. The pattern control is amazing. In short, Danley boxes cost way less, sound way better, and give me all the pattern control I need, so why mess with anything else?”

Simple, Beautiful, and Unobtrusive: A Single Danley SM100 Provides Clear, Intelligible Audio for Grace Primitive Church

Grace Primitive Baptist Church in Pearl, Mississippi supports a close-knit community of believers with very traditional services. Spoken word and sung vocals are the focus, with occasional support from backing tracks. Its long, rectangular sanctuary can accommodate approximately three-hundred congregants, but until recently, many of them had difficulty understanding what was being said or sung. AV integration firm Sound and Communications (SoundCOM) of Flowood, Mississippi solved Grace Primitive’s intelligibility problems by designing and installing a new sound reinforcement system led by a single, unobtrusive Danley Sound Labs SM100 full-range, point-source loudspeaker.

“The old loudspeaker they had in there was original to the building, which is seventeen years old,” explained Allen Cotton, solutions architect with Sound and Communications. “They weren’t pleased with the coverage or the clarity. They called our office and we arranged to come by and visit. As a certified Danley designer, Danley’s point-source fidelity was in the back of my mind the whole time. During the visit, we learned that they were not only hopeful that their intelligibility problems could be fixed, they wanted it done in a way that had no visual impact. They wanted something that was unobtrusive.”
