The MIDI Association (TMA), a global community of people who use MIDI to create music and art, has announced the first #DigMyRig contest. Sponsored in cooperation with media partner Broadjam, the contest is a celebration of more than 30 years of MIDI, and its impact on modern music.
The contest brings together MIDI users of all backgrounds and levels of experience and expertise, offering an opportunity to share their stories and their setups, and a chance to win valuable prizes donated by TMA members including Roland, Yamaha, Gibson, iConnectivity, and many more.
The first prize winner will take home a selection of MIDI gear worth over $3000, including a Roland JP-08 synthesizer, Yamaha DTX Multi 12 controller, Cubase Pro 8.5 workstation software, Steinberg UR44 interface, and much more. Second prize, worth more than $2000, includes a Yamaha Reface CS synth, Roland TR8 Rhythm Performer, Steinberg UR242 interface, and more. The Church at Brook Hills, in Birmingham, Alabama, was established in 1990 and grew quickly, establishing a strong membership, and an impressive Campus and Worship Room that seats up to 2000 people. The church currently runs three Sunday services every week, as well as quarterly mid-week prayer services and other special events such as monthly choir appearances.

Woodside’s Lake Orion campus was originally founded in 2009 as a portable church, operating out of an area middle school. Recently, the church acquired a new building for the Lake Orion campus to call home, outfitting the space with a Renkus-Heinz VARIAi variable array loudspeaker system. As Bob Sullivan, Principal of Advanced Lighting and Sound in Troy, MI, explains, the 85,000 square foot former retail store was an unusual and challenging space.
“Because it was a former retail space, there were a number of structural changes that needed to be made,” Sullivan begins. “There were issues with bringing power and other infrastructure up to code, as well as a need to accommodate an existing set of escalators between floors.”

The First Southern Baptist Church in Pratt, Kansas, had the kind of problems that most churches wish they had: they were growing fast and had reached the point where they needed additional services each weekend to accommodate the nearly 800 people in the congregation. Its physical plant could not keep up. Enter Builders for Christ, a non-profit that gathers volunteers to construct church buildings for needy congregations at no cost. Last year, the organization constructed a new building for the First Southern Baptist Church, one that far better accommodates their growing flock. Thanks to Advanced Sound & Communication, a Kansas City-based AV company, they now also have a state-of-the-art media center for their AV needs that includes a new projection system with wraparound screens, five projectors, three Apple iMac computers, PTZ-networked cameras, and an entirely new PA system including speakers, consoles and wireless microphones.
