Technology is changing all around us and churches cannot be locked in one direction. Whether it be projection, lighting, sound or cameras, ¬elders and facility managers tend to have the idea that a system upgrade equates to a budget line item completed for the next ten years; however, in today¹s technology savvy world that idea is changing!
The Naz Upgrades to New Yamaha Digital System
The Naz Church in Grove City, Ohio main auditorium seats approximately 2,800 people and has a congregation of 3,000. The church recently installed two Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles (a CL5 at front of house and a CL1 at monitors), eight Rio input/output boxes: two Rio3224-D, two Rio1608-D, two Ri8s, and two Ro8s. The system was purchased through Boynton Pro Audio (Norwich, NY) and installed by church staff and volunteers.
“This was not our first experience with digital consoles,” states Matt Groves, Technical Director at The Naz. “We previously used a Yamaha LS9 at monitors and a Yamaha PM1D at front of house. The purchase of the CL system began when we started looking for a replacement monitor console because our Yamaha LS9 was stolen from the monitor booth. One of our front of house engineers, Doug McLaughlin with Tech Art Productions in Columbus, suggested we purchase a CL Series, and after researching it more, we discovered how functional it would be for us. Our audio engineers are volunteers with previous digital console experience on our LS9 and PM1D, so the only training required was to watch the self-training videos on the Yamaha website. The set up and operation of the CL system was very user-friendly.”

More Than 5000 Sing Zach Sobiech’s “Clouds”

On December 5, a choir of over 5000 singers came together to sing Zach Sobiech’s “Clouds” at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota as a tribute to the singer-songwriter. A matched pair of Earthworks QTC40s was used to record the 5000-person choir on the first anniversary of the song’s release to benefit the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund at Children’s Cancer Research Fund.
Veteran producer Karl Demer of Atomic K Records & Productions, a full service Audio/Video/Photography production company based in Minneapolis, MN, produced the original version of “Clouds” performed by Zach Sobiech.
“A year ago I was asked to produce a song for a teenager name Zach Sobiech who had terminal cancer and wrote a song to say goodbye to his family and girlfriend,” explains Demer. “A video was made of his experience recording the song. This video went viral on the internet; the song went to #1 on iTunes and Billboard and to this day, has raised nearly 1 million dollars for Children’s cancer research specifically to find a cure for the type of cancer that took his life.”

River Oaks Upgrades to Yamaha CL5 Digital
The 600-seat River Oaks Community Church, in Goshen, Indiana, holds contemporary worship services, and on any given Sunday, serves 1,200 of its congregation. With a rotating pool of 25 musicians, a standard worship service consists of 5-10 members on stage. The church recently retired its aged analog console and upgraded to a new Yamaha CL5 digital audio console and Rio 3224-D and 1608-D input/output boxes, purchased from Mid-America Sound in Greenfield, Indiana.
“We had an analog console for about ten years that outlived its welcome”, states Tim Blaum, Program Director at the church and who installed the CL. “We realized we needed to have additional control and mixing space.”

The government auction, which jeopardizes the future use of wireless microphones and monitors operating in the 600 MHz range, will force many U.S. based content creators — including broadcast, film and live production professionals — to attempt to stage their shows using little more than half of the currently available UHF spectrum.
