Quality matters. Often, the word “quality” evokes thoughts of high-end, splashy — and expensive AV solutions that are commonly found in mega churches, such as massive video walls or a full video production suite.

From the soaring acoustics of gothic cathedrals to the advent of amplified sound and electric instrumentation, sound reinforcement in houses of worship has come a long way since the sermon on the mount.
The Holiday season is a marquee moment for Houses of Worship (HOW), big and small. While it is a time of reflection for the congregation, it can be a busy and intense season for HOW staff.
First Christian Church in Elizabethtown, Kentucky recently called in JCA Media for the latest upgrade to its campus. Having already completed several installation projects for the congregation in the past, JCA Media was on-hand to deliver a Martin Audio main PA system and ceiling speaker installation for the church’s worship areas, classrooms and children’s play areas.
The decision to go with Martin Audio was a simple one. “The tech directors were already familiar with Martin Audio and we always rely on their systems for these types of installations,” explained Alex Peake, Integration Specialist at JCA Media.
JCA Media installed three Martin Audio CDD10s as LCR speakers alongside a pair of SX112 subs flown above the stage to deliver smooth, even coverage across the space. “For this project, the CDDs merged together so beautifully within the main worship area and it was great to see the stage arches accommodating those types of cabinets so well,” stated Peake.
Yamaha is expanding the capabilities of its RIVAGE PM series digital mixing systems with firmware version 4.7, adding the premium Y7 reverb plug-in developed in collaboration with Bricasti Design. Bricasti Design is recognized globally as a leading developer of audio technologies. Its M7 hardware reverb unit is among the most-requested touring and studio technologies, known for its extremely rich-sounding reverb, exceptional sound quality and ease of use. The collaboration between Yamaha and Bricasti on the Y7/RIVAGE PM integration now gives audio engineers more flexibility in bringing the highest level of expressiveness, sound quality and operability to live sound performances.

Panasonic has announced the immediate availability of the ultra-wide-angle lens AW-UE4 compact 4K pan/tilt/zoom camera. With a 111° field of view and capable of video output through three interfaces (HDMI, LAN and USB), the AW-UE4 is ideal for large or small areas, from huddle spaces to lectures/meetings to e-sports production.
Designed with a single cable solution for video transmission, camera control and power supply, the unit supports Power over Ethernet (PoE) and can be used as a USB camera powered from a computer. The camera supports 3840×2160/30p 4K video output and a variety of other formats for use in a wide range of environments. Its ultra-wide-angle lens allows capture of every part of even the largest spaces and the transmission of wide-angle footage from even the smallest installation spaces. With the compact size and versatility of the AW-UE4 body design, it is an optimal remote camera for recording/streaming.
Through broadcast and online digital channels, First Baptist Dallas’ reach expands beyond its in-house attendance. With a following that spans tens of thousands of worshippers, the megachurch takes its audio and video capabilities very seriously, looking to Lead Audio Engineer Brad Roberts to choose just the right gear. Most recently, Roberts became one of the first U.S. users of DPA Microphones’ new 6066 CORE Subminiature Headset Microphone, relying on its capabilities to provide a discreet, high-quality sound for the church’s lead pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress.
“I chose to upgrade the lead pastor’s microphone to DPA’s 6066 because of its impressively small capsule and redesigned headset—for such an unobtrusive solution, the sound quality is impeccable,” explains Roberts. “The 6066 is completely hidden from close-up HD camera shots and its non-reflective boom further improves the aesthetic, as it does not catch undesirable stage light.”
The church’s arsenal of DPA microphones also includes numerous 4061 Omnidirectional Microphones for acoustic pianos and violins in the band, a 4098 Supercardioid Gooseneck Microphone at the podium, the 4018VL Vocal Microphone when a handheld mic is needed and a wide array of 4066 Omnidirectional Headset Microphones in all 12 of its worship venues. Roberts relies on the headset mics most often during speaking/teaching presentations, baptisms and drama productions, including the church’s annual Christmas concert. Together, these solutions provide Roberts with the audio quality he desires for these large services, where all eyes—and ears—are tuned in closely.
