Lighting designer Thomas Gerdon, from GERDON design, has recently taken several opportunities to use the new creative LED system Creative Light 1 Plus from GLP in various German TV productions—and has been extremely enthusiastic about its versatile application.

In the RTL game show ‘Du musst dich entscheiden’ (‘You have to decide’), working as lighting designer and lighting cameraman, he designed both the main set and a separate smaller set that was used for original soundtracks with the compact LED systems. “The small set was simply a less appealing conference room within the studio extension. The challenge was to turn it into a TV-compatible set—quickly and with a small budget that also looked like a show. We got around this by placing a couple of flight cases in the background and attaching the magnetic Creative Light 1 Plus to them. Light moods were set by remote control and everything was ready in five minutes,” said Gerdon.

Cumberland Theatre Chooses ADJ’s Focus Spot 5Z

Established in 1988, the Cumberland is western Maryland’s only professional theatre, which produces an annual season of eight in-house productions. The theatre moved to its current location, a 200-seat converted church building, in 1991 and has become a staple of the local arts scene. Led by co-Creative Directors Kimberli Rowley and Rhett Wolford since 2016, the theatre produces a wide variety of shows, including both musicals and straight plays. Every production is developed in-house, with Rhett taking the lead on scenic design as well as technical aspects such as lighting.

When he took on the role of co-Creative Director, Rhett found himself working in a theatre that had an antiquated lighting setup that had not been upgraded since the building opened in the early ‘90s. Over the past five years he has led a program of technical renovations, as budgets have allowed, to introduce DMX control and LED light sources throughout the theatre. The latest phase of this upgrade process was to add in moving head luminaires that would provide added flexibility and creative potential, both for the productions – such as Ring of Fire – when Rhett serves as Lighting Designer himself and for those when outside LDs are brought in to add their creative flair to a show.

The Audio Engineering Society, to further its position as the leading organization to promote the science and art of audio, has been busy improving the member experience and accessibility of its online portal, AES.org. Earlier this year, phase one debuted with a new and more user-friendly membership and event management interface, simplifying the processes of joining the Society, renewing memberships and event registration.

While AES.org is already the destination repository of the entirety of audio knowledge, the site was overdue for a website content management system update which in turn would allow for a functionality update. Today’s relaunch reveals an AES.org that retains familiarity while expanding exponentially on the previous site’s capabilities and usability.

The BYU-Idaho Center, on the western edge of Brigham Young University-Idaho’s Rexburg campus, is an architectural marvel. Dedicated in December 2010 after three years of construction, the “I-Center” is a 435,000-square-foot facility combining two distinct gathering places: a large athletics center equipped with ten multi-use sporting courts and a 15,000-seat auditorium used for student devotionals, ecclesiastical meetings, graduation exercises, and select artistic and cultural events. Recently, the auditorium became more intimate sounding when an L-Acoustics loudspeaker system was installed by Clearwing Systems Integration.

The fan-shaped venue with its 7,500-square-foot stage is one of the largest production theaters in North America, offering only 6,000 fewer seats than its sister facility, the LDS Conference Center at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. Familiar with L-Acoustics loudspeakers installed at other LDS facilities—including the Conference Center, Salt Lake Temple, and Provo’s BYU Marriott Center—BYU-Idaho called on L-Acoustics House of Worship Application Manager Josh Maichele to conduct a product demo in its auditorium. L-Acoustics Certified Provider (CPi) Clearwing Systems Integration had both the inventory and available personnel to assist and was committed to investing the time to fine-tune the demo system to ensure that it would be optimized for the space.
