As one of the music industry’s most highly respected studio and live mixing engineers, Russ Long recently embarked on the Christmas with Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith tour, which also features Jordan Smith, Season 9 winner of The Voice. Long needed a microphone that would capture Grant’s soft vocals without any handling noise. Long has been using DPA mics for over a decade, but only recently tried out the d:facto vocal mic. “This past spring was my first time using the d:facto vocal mic,” says Long. “Amy’s voice is amazing and it sounds great through pretty much any mic I’ve heard her sing into. The challenge is, she sings extremely soft, so off-axis rejection is a big consideration, as is handling noise. Since she’s singing soft, the mic preamp has to be cranked up, so a mic that is only slightly susceptible to handling noise with another vocalist becomes a significant concern with Amy. Ryan Lewis, who was my system tech last year, has golden ears and insisted I give the d:facto a try. Once I did, there was no going back. It has virtually no handling noise at all and it sounds simply stunning.”

Willow Creek Community Church is among the largest worship facilities in the U.S., serving a weekly congregation of 26,000 in the Chicagoland area. The church’s 800,000-square-foot main campus, located in South Barrington, Illinois, recently underwent a major upgrade to its AV systems, including Yamaha FOH, monitor and broadcast consoles, a robust Dante™ network infrastructure, Cisco network switches, Meyer Sound MILO and M2D systems and much more. Helping to distribute the audio between each location is a number of RedNet Dante-networked audio interfaces from Focusrite.
As with many modern churches, AV production takes a central role in worship, including video screens and closed-circuit feeds, broadcast and streaming, and more. Matt Wentz, who has been with the church for the past 11 years and for the past six the Audio Systems Engineer, notes, “Our whole production team is as many as 30 people total, and they’re broken up into three smaller crews. We updated our video systems last year, and it was important we upgrade the audio to keep up. Dante was clearly the right solution as far as networking such a big campus, and we were running into some conversion issues here and there. After doing extensive research, I acquired a RedNet 6 interface, and the rest sort of came together piece by piece.”

Originally named Hickory Grove, Jerseyville earned its current name in 1834, when the town was surveyed and platted by two of the many residents who moved there from New Jersey. Jersey County was established in 1839, and two years later, the first Catholic Mass was celebrated in the new county. Holy Ghost Catholic Church, part of the Diocese at Springfield in Illinois, was established in 1883, although the current mid-century modern edifice is only about a half-century old.
Until this year, Holy Ghost Church’s sound system was of the same vintage, with two 1960s-style column speakers located at the extreme left and right sides, driven by an equally ancient four-channel powered mixer. In some ways the worst seat in the house was front and center. After struggling with a challenging acoustical environment and a sound-reinforcement system that couldn’t distribute sound consistently throughout all areas of their sanctuary, Prescott United Methodist Church decided enough was enough. After all, if the congregation can’t hear clearly, the message is lost. To solve the problem, church management upgraded to a line array system drawn from the TrueLine catalog of Greensboro, North Carolina-based WorxAudio Technologies, a division of PreSonus (www.presonus.com).
CSD Group, Inc., an award winning, nationally recognized Fort Wayne, Indiana, firm that provides design and installation services for audio, video, and lighting, was contracted to design and install the church’s new sound system. Working in close coordination with the WorxAudio Technologies’ engineering team, CSD president Doug Hood and his crew ultimately deployed two WorxAudio X3i-P compact, all-in-one, powered line arrays as the primary loudspeaker system.
Dodge City’s Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe is a stunning architectural achievement that embodies the classic disparity between traditional and contemporary worship. With its soaring ceilings and open, 270-degree seating, this 1400-seat sanctuary creates a wonderfully reverberant sense of musical majesty, but at the expense of the intelligibility needed to deliver the message.
To address these issues in the 12 year-old building, Amos Yost of Montezuma, KS-based Montezuma Sound was contracted to design and install a new sound system. His solution for creating clear intelligibility amid the room’s glorious reverb was centered on the IC Live digitally steerable array system by Renkus-Heinz.
As Yost explains, the room’s circular design and abundance of hard, reflective surfaces presented a number of challenges, and the existing distributed PA’s speakers were aimed almost straight down at the tile floor, creating uncontrolled reflections that exacerbated the room’s ringing 3.5-second reverberation time.
“The organ and choir music sounded pretty good, but voice intelligibility was sorely lacking,” notes Yost. It was clear that a steerable array system would directly address the room’s issues, but because the sanctuary is a circular space, effective deployment would be tricky.
